The second edition of BDD’s Cine Club took place on November 16th at BDD 1075 1st Floor. Following through with our goal of screening movies that add value to everyone watching, we decided to play “Pirates of Silicon Valley” considering the number of startups and entrepreneurs that could relate to the movie’s plot. This is a semi-humorous biographical film about the men who made the world of technology what it is today, their struggles during college, the founding of their companies, and the ingenious actions they took to build up the global corporate empires of Apple Computer Corporation and Microsoft Inc. Noah Wyle and Joey Slotnick portray Apple founders Steve Job and Steve Wozniak. Anthony Michael Hall and John DiMaggio play Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. The film attempts to compare the two firm’s operations and differences in the founder’s operations.
It was especially beneficial to learn that even the founders of two of the biggest companies in the world started from zero and worked through countless problems and difficulties to get to where they are today; be it in regard to raising funds or dealing with competition.
After the movie our guest speaker, Hasan Youness, lead a little talk about the movie and its motives. Hasan Younes is specialized in international business management, educational administration, and educational leadership. He spoke about the importance of pushing through and believing in one’s dreams regardless of the cost of our end goal. He stressed on the importance of teamwork and how it is prominent to give credit for work where it is due.
All in all, I think we should end this with a quote by the late Steve Jobs; Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations. So keep on working!
This won’t be the last Cine Club, stay tuned for a great lineup of movies waiting for you in 2017! Until then, we would love you to share some movie recommendations and wish you a happy new year!
